Symptoms of Intussusception
Intussusception is a serious yet treatable condition that occurs when part of the intestine slides into an adjacent part of the intestine. The most often-recognized sign of intussusception is bloody mucousy stools, commonly referred to as a "red currant jelly stool." Other symptoms can include:
- Abdominal pain
- Vomiting
- Lethargy
- Fever
- Lumps or swelling in the abdomen
For young children, rectal exams may reveal a sausage-shaped mass that indicates an intussusception. If you observe these signs in your child or yourself, seek medical attention immediately to ensure the condition does not worsen. The prognosis for those with intussusception is often good, with early diagnosis and treatment leading to full recovery in many cases.
Peritonitis
A serious consequence of intussusception is peritonitis. Peritonitis is an inflammation and bacterial infection that develops when a tear in the intestines permits bacteria access to the abdomen. If left untreated, this condition can be life-threatening.
